Hello!

We left Kyoto on 15 November for Nagoya. This was a 36 minutes journey by Shinkansen. At Nagoya Station, we took the Shinano 9 for Nagano. This was the first time that a JR train was delayed and just before Matsumoto, the announcement sound system went dead and because the train stopped at 13:53 at a station, we thought that we had arrived at Nagano, but a few minutes on the platform made us realised that this was not Nagano and we hastily boarded the train to arrive at Nagano some 20 minutes late. One redeeming feature of this journey was the platform attendant insisted in carrying our luggage up a flight of stairs! As we had 40 minutes before the next train, I looked for roasted chestnuts because Nagano was famous for chestnuts, but this was not successful.

We then looked for the station for the Nagaden Dentetsu Line which was located outside the JR Nagano Station, on the right hand side. We could not find a lift and had to carry the three bags down two flights of stairs. Here, Anne saw people emerging from a slope with their luggage! The train itself was of a space age design and in the first carriage, there was a port-hole in the ceiling and we saw the train driver climbing through this port-hole to his cabin! The train ride itself was through a very scenic area and we fully appreciated the panoramic windows.

We arrived at Yudanaka Onsen on time but it was cold and there was a slight rain. We took the road uphill and after 20 minutes, we arrived at Shimaya Ryokan where we were warmly and enthusiastically welcomed by Mr and Mrs Yumoto. Mr Yumoto spoke excellent English and the whole ryokan was well equipped with computers and wifi. He gave us a very good talk on what could be seen in the area and it was very obvious that Lonely Planet left out a huge chunk of interesting things in this area! Our luggage were soon carried upstairs to our two room and we sat down to some hot drinks and Japanese cookies.

Our next surprise was when we sat down for dinner to a most delicious feast of meat, fish, mild pickles and fragrant Japanese rice followed by wonderful tempura and Fuji apples, kiwi fruit and persimmons. Mrs Yumoto was a really great gourmet cook!

Next day, after an equally delicious breakfast, we were taken to the entrance of the Snow Monkey Park, look at IMG_4137. We had to walk along a mountain path for 2 kilometres in the gentle snowing weather before we arrived at the hot springs where the monkeys were. These monkeys were obviously used to human beings and they carried on their activities without paying attention to these two legged beings taking their photographs. The male monkeys were very aggressive to other male monkeys and carried on fight each other or chasing the tails of the females. The baby monkeys were carried around by the mothers. They spent quite a long time grooming each other and soaking in the hot springs.

After seeing the monkeys, we walked down into the town in what we thought was the correct direction. We passed by a brewery which we saw on the way to the Snow Monkey Park and then we were directed into the old town. There were many places offering hot spring baths (at a price) but soon we realised we were hopelessly lost!

As it was lunch time, most shops were closed but eventually found a shop that was open and the lady looking after the shop rang for Mr Yumoto and he came to pick us up. We returned to the ryokan for some hot drinks and then Mr Yumoto took us to the station when we boarded the train to Nagano, a pleasant little city which I will write about later.

We were certainly feeling sad to say goodbye to these two wonderful Mr and Mrs Yumoto and this interesting area.

We only have words of grattitude with you for your good advices when we stayed in Yudanaka. We really enjoyed the visit to the Monkey Park , and the private onsen, too.

"Me and my boyfriend went to Yudanaka for 2 days to experience the famous hot springs of Nagano aerea and to visit the snow monkey park. Mr. Yumoto and his wife are SO kind, helpful and full of attention for their guests. They really care about your visit in Yudanaka and they help you in all possible ways. Mr. Yumoto drove us to the entrance of the monkey park and showed us the best way to come back to town enjoying streets full of hot springs baths, interesting views and shops like a sake producer offering delicious sake tasting! Mr. Yumoto also booked for us an hour in an amazing private hot spring bath with a view on the valley and gave us a lift there! I'm vegan (I don't eat animals or animals'products) and when I explained him my needs, he called a restaurant in order to be sure they prepared something according my taste!!! I was SO happy for that I couldn't thank him enough!!!!
The rooms in the hotel are really clean, comfortable and spacious. They have a beautiful ryokan retró style. In summary: I STRONGLY recommend you to go there!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I wish you and your wife a lovely day.

Dear Mr Yumoto,

It's been a long time. I hope you still remember me. Nonetheless, I will
always remember the great experience and your warm hospitality during our
stay in your inn. It was a fantastic experience and I hope I will have the
opportunity in the future to re-visit your town again.

All the best to your business! Although it is long overdue, I will write
you an review email soon. I cannot log in to hostelworld to write you a
review anymore but I still want to thank you again for your great service
and hospitality in accommodating us at your place. Until today, I can still
clearly remember the memories while we are in Yudanaka, and it is all thanks
to you for guiding us around.

Attached are some of the pictures that I would want to give to your wife.
It is a bit blurry and long overdue, but I hope she likes it. :)
Please find attached.

Take care!

Thank you very much for the photos. I am sorry we took so long to reply. We
had a wonderful stay at the Shimaya. Our rooms were lovely, breakfast was
delicious, and you were extremely helpful. Thank you for driving us to and
from the Snow Monkey park twice and for all the interesting information you
gave us about places to visit - such as the brewery, which was very good,
and the Shrine. And also the town of Obuse.

The Snow Monkeys were wonderful; it was so exciting to get so close to them
and watch their antics.

We would certainly recommend the Shimaya to anyone. We're even thinking of
coming back again ourselves!

Best wishes,

Judy, Graeme, Daniel and Mutsumi

It seems quite a while since we were in Japan during our round the world
travels and the time we spent with you is one of our fondest memories. From
the journey on the train through the beautiful Japanese countryside, getting
off the city trail was so enjoyable and felt like true Japan.

We loved the Ryoken style room, and the stay was very comfortable. My Yumoto
is very friendly, and so helpful. He was kind enough to take us to the
Monkey Park and showed us the lovely way to walk through the town back to
the hotel via gorgeous cherry blossom and past amazing temples. The
restaurant recommendation was fantastic, especially as I am vegetarian, they
even presented us with a token gift when we left which will always remind us
of our time in Nagano. I would highly recommend anyone to take the time to
visit en-route and enjoy some 'Real Japan' out of the citites. Our only
regret was we didn't have enough time to stay and enjoy the onsen while
there. Thank you so much.
ps. We really appreciated the western breakfast to set us on our way.

kind regards,
Julie & Darren

Takahashi mayumi museum (IIyama)

Dear Mr. Yumoto
Thank you for your suggestion that we visit the doll art museum.
This special place brings back happy memories of our own childhood years.
The expression (on the dolls) are heartwarming very personal ~the artist
can remember each crease and line~ each one tells a story.
After the visit ,we had very yummy okonomiyaki + takopachi at a fantastic
stall nearby. A perfect morning for both of us. Thank again.
Hope to see snow monkeys one day!

SNOW MONKEY YUDANAKA SHIBU OBUSE SHIGAKOGEN SHIMAYA [GUEST COMMENT]

My family and I stayed in Shimaya Ryokan in April 2010 and had an absolutely fantastic time. On this trip we travelled to Tokyo, Yokohama, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Kyoto and Nagano, but it was our stay in Yudanaka that really stood out as a highlight of the trip. This was in a big part due to our wonderful stay in Shimaya Ryokan.

Mr. and Mrs. Yumoto do everything possible to make sure you have a wonderful time in their Ryokan and leave with the best possible holiday memories. On the full day we were there Mr. Yumoto provided us with hiking boots for the trail up to the snow monekey park, drove us to the entrance of the park and even came to collect us when we got lost walking back through Shibu Onsen. Later that night Mrs. Yumoto served us and amazing traditional Japanese kaiseki meal, in our own private dining room, thus ending the perfect day. We still talk about it to this day.

The rooms were clean, comfortable and very authentic in the Japanese style. Mr. and Mrs Yumoto provide a very warm welcome and put other hotel chains to shame with their dedication to their guests. Mr. Yumoto kindly drove us to the train station the morning we checked out. I would absolutely recommend to anyone that you stay in Shimaya Ryukan, you won’t regret it. Our only regret was that we didn’t stay longer.

YUDANAKA SHIMAYA Thank you very much. [GUEST COMMENT]

こんばんは Yumoto さん.

Thank you very much for the photos, and the hospitality during our stay. We enjoyed it very much. Indeed, we were just discussing our plan to Japan again late this year or early next year to Hokkaido, and we would like to visit you again if time allowed. Sorry that we didn't write to you soon as I have been very busy this year due to job change. We hope to see you soon, and wish you all the best.

Here are some photos we took during our last trip for your fun.
